Quebec bill looks to protect people from having intimate images shared without consent

Quebec’s justice minister says his new bill would give people a simple and fast way to stop intimate photos and videos of them from being shared without their consent.

Simon Jolin-Barrette says the bill, introduced Thursday, would allow people to complete a form online or at a courthouse and quickly obtain an order from a judge.

He says a judge can issue an order to stop the sharing of the image or video, to have it destroyed, or to de-index a hyperlink to the image or video.

Jolin-Barrette says it should take hours or a few days for an application to be processed and an order to enter into force.

People who do not comply with an order face fines between $5,000 to $50,000 per day and up to 18 months in jail.

The bill also covers pornography websites on which videos are uploaded involving people who have not consented to being filmed.
